Public Interest

We often tackle high-stakes civil rights issues that affect the public interest, both inside and outside of the workplace. This work, which is managed by our public interest committee, is frequently handled in collaboration with nonprofit partners.

Our commitment through time

Our public interest docket includes class action impact litigation, individual representation, and research and drafting support for amicus curiae briefs. We also give an annual public interest grant to a nonprofit that shares our vision for social justice.

Individuals

As part of our public interest docket, we defended the rights of a Black woman who worked as a New York state agency investigator, and experienced pervasive discrimination, harassment, and retaliation, including being suspended without pay and then fired.

Amicus Brief

04.11.2025

Outten & Golden LLP and Towards Justice filed an amicus brief in State of Washington v. Trump. The brief, filed on behalf of nearly 100 academic scholars, argues that Trump’s order would make it harder for immigrants and their descendants to build better lives for themselves.

Our annual public interest grant was given to TechEquity, an Oakland, CA, based nonprofit that raises public consciousness about economic equity issues in the tech industry’s products and practices.

Civil Rights Litigation

12.10.2024

Outten & Golden and Public Citizen Litigation Group helped three Black men resolve Jackson v. American Airlines. The high-profile case, which was confidentially settled, involved claims of racial profiling on an American flight from Phoenix to New York City.

Amicus Brief

10.11.2023

We drafted and filed an amicus brief on behalf of the Human Trafficking Legal Center and 12 other organizations in Vidal v. Advanced Care Staffing, a case challenging the use of overly complex contracts and forced arbitration to bring foreign nurses to the U.S., and to evade accountability under the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act.

Immigrants' Rights

We successfully settled a case brought by an aerospace professional who experienced pervasive national origin discrimination, harassment, and retaliation in his U.S. workplace, following an international trip to their home country.

Public Interest Grant

Our annual public interest grant was presented to Centro de los Derechos del Migrante, a nonprofit that helps Mexican migrant workers defend and protect their rights as they move between their home communities in Mexico and their workplaces in the U.S.
