I’ve mediated and negotiated transactions, contracts, compensation, severance and exit arrangements, and many other matters for my clients. I’ve also counseled clients concerning non-competition and non-solicitation restrictions and countless other issues.
In every situation, my goal is to negotiate effectively and achieve a positive outcome, without resorting to litigation. But if that becomes necessary, I bring extensive FINRA, JAMS and AAA arbitration experience to the table, as well as trial and appellate experience in federal and state courts.
My style is built on a foundation of listening, collaboration, creativity, and finely tuned negotiating. I start every conversation looking to fully understand what my clients want to achieve, not just in their current situation but in their careers. Then I help structure a strategy to drive towards those goals.
I always look at situations from multiple perspectives, including those of a judge or arbitrator, or defense counsel. My extensive experience also gives me insight as to how employers think. This helps me design and negotiate solutions that others might miss by looking solely through one lens.
My parents were first-generation Chinese Americans who taught me that hard work and focusing on your customer are keys to success. Their example continues to resonate in my life and career.
Where I grew up, there weren’t many Chinese families. This gave me a bit of an outsider’s mentality and sparked an interest in social justice that continues to today. As a lawyer, I’ve always been drawn to representing people rather than companies. I feel strongly about leveling the playing field for individual employees faced with challenging employers that have immense resources.
Practicing law is also an extension of my life-long dedication to sharpening my skills. Many years ago, I began learning to play piano and guitar, practicing tirelessly until I reached a level of confidence and proficiency. Today, I play music for my own enjoyment and in a band that performs locally. I also learned billiards in my teens, working hard on my technique and eventually becoming a collegiate champion at Cornell and a regional champion. While in college, I met a former world champion who became a mentor, and he and I wrote several books about billiards together.
My emphasis on practice and skill-building continues to this day, fueling my dedication to my clients.
