As part of the $20 million settlement secured by Outten & Golden LLP in Haggan v. Google, a nearly $200,000 cy pres award is being distributed to the National Women’s Law Center and Girls Who Code to advance gender equity and expand opportunities for women and girls.
A cy pres award directs settlement funds that are not distributed to class members to nonprofit organizations whose work advances the goals of the litigation.
This lawsuit was a pay equity class and collective action brought by women who worked at Google in New York and challenged alleged discrimination in the company’s pay, leveling, promotion, and performance-calibration practices. Those practices allegedly steered women into lower levels, suppressed their compensation, and hindered their advancement compared with similarly situated male employees.
The National Women’s Law Center and Girls Who Code play a vital role in expanding opportunity, challenging gender-based barriers, and supporting a more equitable future for women and girls.
By supporting these organizations, the award extends the litigation’s impact and supports efforts to strengthen workplace equality and opportunity in tech companies and beyond.
