My Legal Practice

As Co-Chair of Outten & Golden’s Whistleblower & Retaliation Practice, I exclusively represent whistleblowers, with a particular focus on matters involving the SEC, CFTC, and IRS whistleblower programs. I also counsel clients in False Claims Act cases alleging fraud against the government, and in retaliation matters brought under Dodd-Frank, Sarbanes-Oxley, New York Labor Law 740, and other whistleblower protection laws.

Collectively, my clients’ tips have helped the federal government recover hundreds of millions of dollars on behalf of investors and taxpayers.

I routinely counsel my clients—often senior executives at public companies and prominent financial services firms—on the federal enforcement landscape, including how to effectively report increasingly complex fraudulent schemes. I pride myself on being an unflappable and steadfast ally for individuals at highly vulnerable crossroads, facing tremendous legal, financial, professional, and emotional risk.

In service to both my clients and the public interest, I regularly appear before state and federal enforcement agencies and state and federal trial and appellate courts. I’m an active member of whistleblower bar associations and work closely with The Anti-Fraud Coalition (TAF), the leading organization for whistleblowers and their attorneys. I currently serve as Chair of TAF’s Member Education Committee and am a frequent writer and speaker on key issues and trends in whistleblower law.

Outside of my law practice, I serve as Founder and Director of Success in Kapiri, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that works to improve education access in Malawi—a mission I launched after serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer from 2008 to 2010.

Notable Cases

  • Represented a physician who blew the whistle on an unlawful kickback scheme involving medically unnecessary blood tests, resulting in a $114 million jury verdict, which was later upheld on appeal.
  • Represented a hospital executive in a qui tam lawsuit that exposed the hospital’s massive fraud and unlawful kickback scheme. The DOJ joined the whistleblower’s lawsuit, and the case was settled for $50 million.
  • Represented a doctor in a multi-whistleblower case against various medical lab companies, resulting in $56 million in total settlements, including a $6 million settlement reached without government intervention.
  • Reached a $22.8 million settlement in a customs fraud case brought by a former purchasing and logistics employee who alleged a multi-national chemical company misclassified and undervalued materials reported to U.S. Customs. The case is one of the largest customs False Claims Act settlements.
  • Obtained a higher reward for an overseas whistleblower who was initially only granted 10% under the SEC whistleblower reward program.
  • Brought claims by financial services industry whistleblowers against multiple Ponzi schemes worth hundreds of millions of dollars, leading to civil and criminal enforcement actions.

Whistleblowers deserve to have their stories heard. My job is to listen with compassion and recognize the deeply personal reality of that story, but also to evaluate the merits of a case with discipline, knowledge and pragmatism. At the end of each day, it’s tremendously gratifying to work with people who are willing to take on Wall Street behemoths and hold powerful companies accountable.

My Story

I love learning and hearing other people’s stories much more than I like telling my own. The great thing about being an attorney for whistleblowers is that I learn new things every day through the personal and professional stories my clients and prospective clients tell.

These are usually very difficult stories of personal loss, but they’re also often stories of a regular person who just wants to stand up for what’s right. I am very fortunate to have a job that lets me help those people do just that.
