From 2022 to 2024, Mikael served as senior counsel to the assistant attorney general for the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, where he advised department leaders on civil rights issues relating to economic justice and discrimination in employment, housing, lending, and federal contracting programs. Mikael is frequently quoted in the media on issues relating to employment, civil rights, and the DOJ. He is also a past vice president of the Hispanic Bar Association of the District of Columbia.
